Task 2:Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.
Do you agree or disagree?
It is believed by some people that lesser time is dedicated to learn practical skills as compared to learning facts, in all levels of education. I agree with this chain of thought.
Primary school is the foundation of our education and every child must be taught literacy, numeracy along with general knowledge. There should also be a good balance between factual knowledge and extra curricular activities. By the time a child reaches high school, the pressure to excel in secondary education becomes so high that the focus from skill development is lost. Practical skills are essential for a child’s personality development and overall growth.
Moreover, the rat race to achieve the cut off numbers in a seat in a good university and preference for merit based admission forces the student to cram all the facts and information from the books and write exams solely to get high scores. It is unfair to judge a student’s potential solely on his or her exam results as it does not determine their capabilities in real life situations.
Personally, I struggled with mathematics in school and I feel it has not helped me or been put to use in my life. My favorite subject in school was computer science but I did not get the opportunity to learn how to actually use a computer. Learning the functions of a computer through text books but not being able to operate one in reality was a huge drawback in my passion for computers.
