PAST INDEFINITE TENSE (Simple Past Tense) Definition: It is used to describe actions that happened in the past such as a habit of the past. In this tense, we will use the second form of the main verb.  PAST INDEFINITE TENSE: AFFIRMATIVE/POSITIVE – ਪਹਿਚਾਣ : ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ, ਈ, ਏ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਰਬ ਦੀ ਦੂਜੀ ਫਾਰਮ(v2) ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

3	ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਤਰ ਲਿਖਿਆ	I wrote a letter to him. (Wrote is past of write)

PAST INDEFINITE TENSE: NEGATIVE : ਪਹਿਚਾਣ – ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ, ਈ, ਏ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ did not ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਰਬ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਫਾਰਮ(v1) ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

3	ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਤਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ।	I did not write a letter to him.

NOTE: – we cannot use the second form of the main verb with did because did‘ is already past form. Moreover, a helping verb(did) here describes tense, so the main verb need not to be changed. PAST INDEFINITE TENSE: INTERROGATIVE : ਪਹਿਚਾਣ – ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਲਗਾਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਪੁੱਛਿਆਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ, ਈ, ਏ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ did ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਰਬ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਫਾਰਮ(v1) ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ ।

NOTE– These sentences are used to ask questions, so we will start these question mark sentences with helping verbs.  OTHER EXAMPLES :

• Did my mother go to see a doctor? 

• Did he help you in your studies? 

• Did children play with their toys? 

PAST INDEFINITE TENSE : INTERROGATIVE NEGATIVE : ਪਹਿਚਾਣ – ਵਾਕ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਲਗਾਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਪੁੱਛਿਆਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ, ਈ, ਏ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ did ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ Not ਨੂੰ ਵਰਬ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਫਾਰਮ(v1) ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਲਗਾਇਆ ਜਾਦਾਂ ਹੈ  ।

USED TO– It is a modal verb that is used to say something that happened in the past.  AFFIRMATIVE/POSITIVE  RULE–SUB+USED TO+V1+OB

ਉਹ ਗੁਰਦਵਾਰੇ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ।	They used to go to the Sikh temple.

FOR EXAMPLE 

• I used to play cricket in my childhood 

• He used to get up early. 

• They used to go to the Sikh temple. 

NEGATIVE  As we are using did as a helping verb in these sentences, we will use V1+use to (not used to), because used is the second form of use.  RULE–SUB+DID+NOT+USE+TO+V1+OB 

• I did not use to play cricket in my childhood. 

• You did not use to go for a walk. 

• My father did not use to eat fast food.
